Philips Hue vs Lifx: 5 MAJOR Differences

Smart home technologies have been around for a while, and every day we seem to get a new “smart” object. Smart light bulbs, smart fridges, smart water, smart cooker. You get the idea. But how effective can they actually be? And do they compare to the competition? Today, we’ll be looking at one of the more popular smart options, lighting. More specifically, Philips Hue and LifX. What’s the difference? Which one’s better? We’re about to find out, with a little review.

First I want to say that I’ve had time to mess with both, I’ve setup a LifX system in a room for my girlfriend and my parents recently had a Hue lighting system implemented in their home, using slave labor of course. And by slave labor, I mean me. I did the installing. Either way, I got experience using and installing both so be prepared for some interesting viewpoints. Here’s a list of a couple of things we’re going to go over so I made quick little time stamps to help you guys out. It’s going to be a general overview. Now, let’s start.

Price is roughly the same across the board, with Hue’s standard 800 lumen bulbs costing more while lifx costs $5 less. However, across the line, LifX and Hue offer some similar offerings but LifX provides higher lumens, that’s brightness, per dollar. The Philips hue system also requires the purchase of a hub that connects them all. So, for price, I’d say LifX takes it. It’s definitely the better value option.

That brings us to product offerings, Hue is just vastly superior, they have practically every product that Lifx has, except some of the really cool ones, and has even more than them. Need a TV light? BAM, need a glowing colorful orb thing…? BAM there you go. Lifx, however, has some interesting things like their tile and bar, which looks super futuristic. Hue, though, wins in terms of accessories. Listen, if you plug either the Philips hue or lifx bulbs into the socket of your house, and flip the light switch to the off position, that means you can’t access them from the app or a smart assistant anymore, unless you physically turn them back on. However, Philips hue has wireless accessories that allow you to basically use their lights like normal lights, with a switcher and dimmer. They also got a whole lot more of different accessories as well, and lifx doesn’t have as much if any at all. Again this does add to the cost, but it’s nice to have and Philips did good on that one.

Now the Apps, the apps for both works well, if a light is offline for any reason, they both tell you, you can control the lights really well from both of them, but there are a couple of differences. The Hue app gives you greater control over the lights in terms of routines, where you can set them to turn on or off at a certain time. You can set this by room, specific lights, and even the color profile. It’s really nice. On the other end of the spectrum however, Lifx allows greater color control with a ton of different rainbow colors to set that really nice mood. Oh, yeah. You know what kind of mood you’re going for.

Lastly, setup. Honestly, setup is super simple but slightly different for both. Both require the app to setup, but the Hue system requires setting up the hub, from there, hue lets you setup lights individual or multiple at once, since it’s all through the hub. Lifx however, requires you do them each individually since they are each WIFI enabled. So, basically if you have a lot of bulbs, hue would be a better solution because it’s technically one internet device, the hub. They’re all connected to the hub. The LifX on the other hand is all individual and can be counted as a lot of different wifi devices.

So, overall those are the big differences between the two systems. Both systems have their pros and cons and honestly, for the average person I think Philips hue is a better whole home solution, while Lifx is much better for smaller endeavors, so now let me ask you guys.
