2009 Kawasaki Vulcan 500 LTD. Won't start.

Removed controls on handlebars to paint, reassembled them, starter button doesn't work. Disassembled again, wire in middle of button loose, manually held together and attempted to start and bike is dead in the water. Lights and gauges comes on when key is in ignition, checked voltage on battery (12.61v), used jumper cables from my bike with a new battery, and checked all of the fuses by eye. All to no avail. Let me know what you think the issue could be.
