Since 1800, the elected leader of the United States has called it home. Over the following 200 years, it was constantly expanded, modified and renovated to both modernize it and ensure it met the needs and tastes of various Presidents. Though its name is rather unimaginative, today anyone who sees it knows exactly what this iconic building is and where it is located. Naturally, we are talking about none other than the White House. Ahead we’ll show you 10 little known facts and secrets related to one of the world’s most famous building.
What kind of secrets? Well, there are the hidden alarm buttons and levers hidden all around the President’s office. With the flip of a switch, POTUS can apparently alert everyone that he needs help. Then there are the infrared sensors all around the outside of the building. These detect heat and can alert guards to an intruder. Inside, the air and water systems are pretty high-tech and monitored 24/7. The slightest trace of anything dangerous and alarms sound and systems go into backup mode. Then there’s the rumor about the trap door under the president’s desk. Reportedly installed so POTUS can make a quick escape, it only makes sense that this door should lead to an elaborate underground built beneath the White House. Back above ground – in fact on the roof – the White House has an array of sensors, radar and even a laser system built to detect intruders that trespass in the restricted airspace above and around 1700 Pennsylvania Avenue. On a less serious and worrying note, there’s also a secret tunnel that leads the First family and guests to a much happier location – the pool. We also wonder if this tunnel lets them get to the massive wine cellar reportedly located under the White House? Loaded with bottles of red, white and champagne, we guess it’s no surprise the White House would be well stocked. However, don’t expect to sneak around much of the interior without the Secret Service knowing you are there. That’s in part thanks to the pressure pads which enable them to know exactly where POTUS is at all times. Of course, this lack of privacy extends to the bedroom where a recently revealed secret indicates that Secret service agents know when the President and First Lady are getting amorous. They even have a code phrase for it. Yikes!
