Yusaku Matsuda (松田 優作), Taka's high school senior - Yokohama Honky Tonk Blues, Live

Yusaku Matsuda was one of the most talented and the coolest actors in Japan but unfortunately he's got cancer in 1988, and after forcing himself, knowing shortening his life, to shoot Black Rain(1989); directed by Ridley Scott; featuring Michael Douglas and Andy Garcia, he passed away in the year at his age 40. Black Rain, has been not only Yusaku's debut in Hollywood that he dreamed of but also his last work. His character and ability in acting 'Sato' in Black Rain has won a lot of praises, and the next movie was going to be with Robert De Niro if Yusaku was alive.
和訳）ユウサク・マツダ（松田優作）は日本で最も才能があって、クールな俳優の一人でしたが、不幸にも1988年に癌にかかり、マイケル・ダグラスやアンディー・ガルシア出演、リドリー・スコット監督のブラック・レイン(1989)を、早死を覚悟して撮った後、同年、40歳の時に亡くなりました。映画、ブラック・レインは優作の夢見たハリウッドへのデビューであると同時に、彼の遺作になりました。ブラック・レインで佐藤を演じた彼の個性と演技の実力は賞賛を得、もし優作が生きていたら、次の映画はロバート・デ・ニーロとの共演になるはずでした。

I have been a big fan of Yusaku since he and I grew up in the same city of Japan. I can walk to his neighborhood from my place. Both his father and mine are from Nagasaki. We also went to the same high school. Actually, I and Yusaku's niece Tomoko went to the high school during the same years. It's so cool that she calls Yusaku 'Uncle.' Maybe she is in U.S. somewhere. My biggest regret was that I didn't ask Tomoko a favor for me to meet Yusaku when he was back home.
僕はずーっと優作のビッグ・ファンでした。なぜなら彼と僕は日本の同じ市で育ったからです。僕の所から彼の所まで歩いて行けます。又、優作の父親も、僕の父親も長崎出身です。我々は同じ高校にも行きました。僕と、優作の姪の知子は実際同じ高校の同じ学年でしたし、彼女が優作を「おいちゃん。」と呼ぶのは相当クールだった。多分彼女はアメリカの何処かにいるんじゃないかな。僕の一番の後悔は、知子に優作が帰って来ている時に「会わせて欲しい。」と頼まなかった事だ。

'Yokohama Honky Tonk Blues' probably is the most popular song from his music career. I actually lived in Yokohama as well until I moved to New York in 1991. That makes this song more impressive and meaningful to me because I can easily imagine what it's like being in Yokohama.
'ヨコハマ・ホンキー・トンク・ブルース'はおそらく彼の音楽活動の中で最も有名な歌です。実は僕は、1991年にニューヨークに移るまで横浜にも住んでいたので、それも僕にとってさらにこの曲を意味ある感動的なものにします。なぜなら、横浜にいるのがどんなものなのか、僕には、すぐ想像できるからです。

Please mind that Yusaku Matsuda is originally a really dedicated actor - not a singer.
ユウサク・マツダは、本当に気合の入った役者で、本来は歌手では無い事を心に留めてください。

By the way, when I was a car designer at Mazda, its VP Tom Matano, the chairman of Mazda Design North America at that time, told me in LA, 'You remind me that Japanese actor in Black Rain...' I was surprised but happy to hear that from him.
因みに、僕がマツダのカー・デザイナーだった時に、当時、北米マツダの副社長、兼デザイン部長だったトム俣野さんからLAで「お前、あのブラック・レインに出ていた日本人の俳優を思わせるなあ。」と言われ、びっくりしながら、嬉しかった。

P.S. My car designer friend, Alan Adelman's aunt was one of the boards of Paramount Pictures who made Black Rain. Alan went to the movie premier in Tokyo 1989 to help her as a translator but he came back later and told me that he didn't understand their Japanese at all. :) I should have asked Alan to let me help translation job so that Alan's job would go smoothly, and I could meet Yusaku to introduce myself at the premier.
P.S. 当時仲良かったカー・デザイナーの友達、アラン・エイデルマンのおばさんは、ブラック・レインを作ったパラマウントピクチャーの重役で、1989年、東京で映画のプレミアがあった時、彼は通訳で彼女を助けに行ったが、後で僕に、｢ニホンゴ、ゼンゼン、ワカラナカッタヨ。｣と言った。:) 「俺にも通訳の仕事を手伝わせてくれ、そしたら仕事はスムースに行き、俺は優作に会えて、自己紹介出来る。｣ ってアランに聞けば良かった。
