Determinism vs Free Will in Digital Age

From the book "THE GREAT DISCREPANCY" by Boris Kriger

The contention between determinism and free will can often appear as an empty debate, a mere exercise in sophistry. It can be compared to attempting the application of theories such as relativity or quantum physics in the context of everyday life. Such sophisticated principles may be utterly compelling within their own fields, yet they can seldom provide clear directives or yield practical implications when it comes to the complexities of human behavior or the decisions that one makes from moment to moment.
Undoubtedly, both humans and other sentient beings possess the capacity for free will, albeit in a significantly limited form. The faculty of choice, irrespective of its constraints, forms a critical component of our lives. We, as sentient creatures, possess the agency to act one way or another, to follow a certain path or to take an entirely different route. These choices, as limited as they may be, mirror the multitude of possibilities that life offers, giving weight to the argument of free will against the seemingly rigid confines of determinism.
Regrettably, the matter of determinism versus free will has become fertile ground for a spectrum of speculation. On one end of this spectrum, we find individuals who use the cloak of inevitability to justify any action, no matter how morally questionable or ethically dubious. They assert that such actions are merely the result of a predetermined fate, thus freeing themselves from the responsibility of their own choices and casting the concept of accountability into oblivion.
On the other side of the debate, we encounter those who steadfastly maintain the sanctity of free will, positing it as an inviolable gift bestowed upon us. They argue that this freedom, this capacity to make choices, is so sacrosanct that even divine intervention must refrain from intruding upon our lives, so as not to violate our precious free will. It is through this lens that they interpret the interaction between the human will and the divine, maintaining a balance where the celestial respects the terrestrial freedom.

The central conundrum, then, lies in how we can expand the boundaries of our free will's application without encroaching upon the interests of those around us. To safeguard both our autonomy and the rights of others requires an elegant equilibrium, a delicate dance that continues to challenge scholars, lawmakers, and philosophers alike. It is not a question of limiting or enhancing free will per se but rather of understanding how it coexists with other equally significant societal constructs in a manner that fosters harmony and mutual respect.
In part, a potential resolution may lie in the virtualization of our activities. By leveraging digital environments, we might find room to expand our sphere of influence without physically infringing upon others. This emerging domain of activity, largely unhindered by traditional physical limitations, offers an unexplored territory where the complexities of free will can be further examined and redefined, establishing a novel avenue for our existential debate.
