Wolf spiders use venom to subdue prey and deter predators. It's a protein cocktail with paralytic and cytotoxic properties. What this means is- their venom stops their prey in its tracks and dissolves its insides. But how does this work? Venom basically destroys the membranes of cells, causing their liquid insides to leak out (hence the bug soup they drink from their victims). Does this happen to humans? Turns out... yes (Liu et al 2009 http://www.scielo.br/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S1678-91992009000100008 ). To my knowledge, no one has filmed this process, so I hope you enjoy and learn something from this incredible experiment and spider encounter!
DISCLAIMER: Do not attempt to replicate anything you see in this video. I am a professional and have been working with spiders and other invertebrates for years. If you attempt to repeat this experiment you may injure yourself or the spider. Spiders only bite when extremely provoked and they fear for their life. They are important parts of the ecosystem and it's much safer to keep your distance in the wild.
Most nature shows take place in far off locations or tell you not to try this at home. Here on MyWildBackyard my goal is to get you up close and personal with the fascinating wildlife where I live and show you that you can have a wildlife adventure of your own right at home in your own backyard! Have a taste for exploring and love weird creatures? Join the adventure by subscribing!
Always use caution when exploring your backyard. Read up and educate yourself on dangerous species in your area, and know not to touch them. Contact local wildlife experts if a dangerous animal is causing problems where you live.
