Packing Pottery for Shipping and Preventing Breakage! Day 45 Quarantine Distraction

Coronavirus Quarantine: Video 45

I will be trying to post simple daily videos for inspiration for my students, and my subscribers to help give us some learning and distraction during this national emergency. Here is a link to the playlist I am adding to: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLj0pNzEmvM_qHHMTkWNXKzUd_0BADQL0a

This video I shot as I needed to box up a few cups for shipment… and I thought this video may help people who are new to shipping, to aid you in successful shipping- and hopefully to prevent breakage. I am shipping via USPS Priority Mail (as it has tracking and insurance) and I use free boxes from the post office. Here is a link for the boxes you can find marked as free: https://store.usps.com/store/home

My recommendation is to wrap the pottery in bubble wrap, and double box. Making sure the pottery is secure and not moving is key. Double boxing as practice cannot be underrated for security in shipping. Single boxing dramatically increases your chance of breakage.

Tape the box well so the flaps won’t get caught and ripped, and also mark the box as fragile. Choose the shipper that is right for you!

I do highly recommend checking out your local ceramic suppliers… mine is Cornell Studio Supply in Dayton (937) 454-0357 https://cornellstudiosupply.com/ They are super helpful if you call them directly- they ship all over! (if you call them, tell them I sent you!)

Check out this link to a live searchable Google Doc I continually update with lots of my favorite tools on Amazon using my associate links! (also some non-amazon suggestions on here!)

I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 29 years, the past 21 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; https://www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsAndGlass

I started my Youtube channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!

Please subscribe to my channel if you would like to receive channel updates, or would like to learn more about clay and studio processes!
