Black Holes... Gravitational Monsters - Part I (Lecture 1)

Black holes are some of the most fascinating objects in the universe and they are the most extreme form of gravity as we understand it today. Almost everyone has heard of black holes… but what are they?

In this 3-part lecture series we will attempt to answer questions such as: What is a black hole? How do they form? Why can nothing escape their gravitational pull? And should we be afraid of these gravitational monsters?

Black holes cannot be understood without understanding gravity. So in Part I, we will first set the stage by getting to know gravity. Then we will start our progression of events that will lead us to black holes by understanding the gravitational collapse of stars at the end of their lives.
