Sculpting a human figure with a 3d pen

Dan Tirels sculpture of the human figure using a 3d pen.

This is the follow up film from my previous demo that goes through the whole process of creating a sculpture with a 3d pen. Not sure if this is a conventional way of using the pen, but it works for me, I show the method starting with a few simple sketches.

It is important to have good reference material for this, a good way is to judge your own proportions, check you have the correct distance between shoulders, length of arms etc. It helps to start with a few simple stick drawings. Choose a simple standing pose.

Working with these 3d pens can be tricky and this is still very new to me, this is only the second time I have experimented with the technique.

Filmed in 2 parts over several days.

Part 1 : Making the base model to use as a template. Materials used : Newspaper, cardboard, parcel tape, bamboo skewers (to add some support to the legs and arms)

Part 2 : The 3d pen. Using a black 1.76mm PLA filament. This is applied in 2 halves so the base model can be removed before joining the 2 halves back together. The pen I'm using is a very basic model, you can only work with it for an hour at a time or it can get overheated and the motor will burn out.
