The Sunday Show on Yulia Tymoshenko’s Chances of Election Success
Presidential candidate Yulia Tymoshenko has been constant figure in Ukrainian politics since the 90s. Having served as prime minister, as well as time behind bars, the former “gas princess” has been making headlines at home and abroad since her starring role at the center of the 2004 Orange Revolution.
Now, at the age of 58, and for the second time in her career, the Batkivshchyna party leader is aiming for the presidency with a campaign focusing on improving economic standards for the ordinary Ukrainian. And it seems to be working. According to the polls, Tymoshenko is on top, followed by incumbent Petro Poroshenko and controversial comedian Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
However, a lot has changed in Ukraine since she was beaten by fugitive ex-president Viktor Yanukovych in the 2010 elections. In a country facing Russian aggression and the challenge of wide-scale reform, will the population really want a member of Ukraine’s political old guard at the helm? And how would Ukraine’s international partners react to a Tymoshenko presidency?
On this week’s Sunday Show we’ll be discussing Tymoshenko’s tumultuous career and whether or not this is finally her time to take the top seat. We’ll be joined by Batkivshchyna MP Oleksiy Riabchyn and former Batkivshchyna MP Yuriy Hanushchak.
