US thwarted alleged assassination plot against Sikh separatist: report
The U.S. government says it asked Indian authorities about allegations of a foiled assassination plot targeting a U.S.-Canadian citizen and expects responsible parties to be “held accountable” on Wednesday.
According to a report by The Financial Times, the target of the alleged plot was Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a general counsel for Sikhs for Justice — a group outlawed by India. Pannun, a dual citizen, has been an organizer of a series of Sikh separatist votes in Canada and the U.S.
The Financial Times’ report comes after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Sept. 18 that Canadian security agencies were pursing “credible allegations” that agents of the Indian government may have been involved in the killing of a B.C. Sikh separatist, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, in June.
On Wednesday, Trudeau did not directly address the report, but said, "We hope that India will continue to take these real concerns seriously.”
Pannun is not only considered a “terrorist” by Indian officials, but he is currently under investigation in Canada for making purported threats against Air India. David Akin has the details.
