"Just win": Toronto Maple Leafs management on firing Sheldon Keefe, other upcoming changes | FULL
Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment President and CEO Keith Pelley on Friday joined Maple Leafs Team President Brendan Shanahan and General Manager Brad Treliving to discuss the state of the team while also addressing the firing of head coach Sheldon Keefe on Thursday.
"This is the first time I've spoken publicly at a news conference as the CEO of MLSE," Pelley said. "And with that title brings heavy responsibility of overseeing the Toronto Maple Leafs. And I relish that opportunity. And at the core of that responsibility is the real reason I came back to Toronto — and that is to win. When I asked during the interview stage what is the definition of success to the owners one of them immediately said emphatically 'just win,'" Pelley added.
After firing head coach Sheldon Keefe on Thursday, General Manager Brad Treliving addressed the decision saying "This is a really good coach. It's an excellent person. The difficulty of this business is really good people and people who are good at their job need to be changed."
The Leafs were eliminated in the first round of the NHL playoffs last Saturday after a Game 7 loss to the Boston Bruins in overtime. The Toronto Maple Leafs have two playoff series wins in the last 20 years, and have not won the Stanley Cup since 1967.
