Hooked Scarf Joints and Bilge Stringers - Episode 159 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

Bilge stringers (which we also call bilge bands) add longitudinal stiffness to Arabella in an area of the boat where it's needed. Carolyn, who's been working on fitting the stringers into the boat, gives us a good look at how she sneaks up on a very smart fit in a hooked scarf. Alix shows us how graving pieces are made for the mizzen. Steve answers a few of your burning questions from the last couple week's comments about how the laminated bulkhead material is laid up.

The most satisfying thing might be seeing those stainless temporary fasteners come out and the bilge stringers go in with their copper rivets.

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts.
