5 Days of Trying Ice Facials: Benefits and Before/After | Lucie Fink

I wanted to see if this experiment would help improve my skin. As you might know, I've been experiencing adult acne, and I've changed up my entire skincare routine. (Check out my recent morning & nighttime skincare routine video for more on that.)

Ice facials--and ice therapy in general--are said to decrease puffiness in your eyes and face, shrink large pores, and refresh your skin, helping you look glowy and instantly more awake. Over the past few months, I have been experimenting a TON with my skincare routines. When I first started experiencing these breakouts, I was ready to try ANYTHING…even submerging my face in bone-chilling ice water DAILY. While facial skin icing is not 100% supported by clinical research, there is some anecdotal evidence to say it's helpful for a number of reasons (decreasing puffiness and helping clear the inflammation that acne causes). Also, many dermatologists and celebrity facialists have recommended it.

Setting up an ice water facial at home is simple! Grab a big bowl, fill it with cold tap water and a handful of ice cubes. At this point, some people might add cucumber slices, lavender, or rose petals into their ice baths. I took the ice water dip for 15 seconds, once a day. If you read about ice water facials and how long your dunk should be, you’ll see that you can do intervals of 15-20 seconds, 3-5 times a session…or for 15-20 minutes, if you're a pro! Don't quote me on that one. Of course, that is something I would need to work my way up to because just submerging my face in ice water daily for those 15 seconds was difficult enough!

I also read that some celebrity facialists recommend doing these baths with WHOLE MILK because of the Vitamin A and naturally exfoliating lactic acid in there! If you're interested in trying that, they suggest dunking a wash cloth into the mixture and then holding the cloth against your face for 15 seconds (that might be easier than going face-first into ice cold milk!).

If you’ve been watching my latest YouTube videos, you've likely seen all that I’ve been experimenting with when it comes to taking care of my skin and trying to calm down my acne & breakouts. My skin has been getting better every day, but I can’t say the improvement is solely due to these ice facials. If you looked at photos from before and after I started doing these ice baths, I don't think you'd notice a crazy difference. However, I do think these facials are a great self-care activity to try throughout the summer, especially after workouts! Every time I was done with my cold water face immersion session and lifted my head from the bowl, I felt fresh, clean, and overall...GREAT! The biggest benefit from my ice water facials was that my skin felt fresh and perhaps a bit less puffy afterwards. But overall, it just felt refreshing!
