In this lecture from Learn Piezo, the origin of piezoelectricity (for many materials), the spontaneous polarization is described. Its origin is in the noncentrosymmetricity of the piezoelectric crystal. This also causes piezoelectric materials to be inherently anisotropic. In this video, basic ideas about an electrical dipole are described followed by a discussion of the spontaneous polarization and its relation to piezoelectric materials.
