DESCRIPTION
This bungalow speaks character, oozing out its own charisma in modern minimalism with a dramatic transition of volumes in the interiors.
From the exterior, this bungalow designed by Ar. Hiren Patel fits right in with the other quietly opulent bungalows in a very premium and posh locality of Prahlad Nagar, in Ahmedabad’s south west side. The residence has been designed practically for 3 people in the family, and thus melds into their way of living. The design approach for this relatively small bungalow of 6,000 sq. ft. was to ensure that the 2-storey structure does not look boxy, but gives a very humble character to its context.
Inspired by the Art Deco style, the house stands timeless. Leaving out margins on all sides, the house sits in the center of the plot with less play of volumes in the exteriors. A smooth curvature envelops the exteriors as only soft edges were given to the building.
At the entrance, a beautiful low level porch with a wooden pergola atop is lined by palm trees on both sides. The porch height has been kept low purposely, to give a warm sense of arrival. Ample of light penetrates through the pergola, allowing the structure to look lighter and less cramped because of its low height. The porch open ups to the public areas in the house, which comprises of the formal living area, family living and the dining beside the kitchen. Here, a dramatic transition of volumes occur. This is where one suddenly enters from a low height area into a stark white double height space in both formal and family living room. The living room appears at first glance colonial with white walls dressed in Royale Play International Designer Collection by Asian Paints. And yet for all its 21st century underpinnings, it contains modern elements including an array of luxurious furnishings. An industrial chandelier hanging from above completes the look.
Taking vastu into consideration, the architect has derived a floor plan that is no less classic. As one moves around the house, there is a strong synchronization of objects. The design creates a sense of journey to the house, to cherish the experience in the space. There is beautiful flow between the indoor and outdoor living spaces, seamlessly merging into one another creating an evocating design that is relaxing as well as inspiring. The dining area and kitchen have been left open to connect well with the spaces. The dining area exploits the views of the beautifully landscaped garden outside. The ground floor also houses a master bedroom.
A central wall segregates the public and private spaces. This wall has been treated as an architect’s expression of Rico. Going up along the length of the bungalow, from a double height area on the ground floor to a single height volume on first floor, further up to the terrace level; this feature wall also supports the staircase. Since Ahmedabad is known for concrete, the volume was intended to be treated in raw concrete. However, the client preferred a smoother finish. Hence, the wall was draped in Royale Play Stucco to give a design expression. Achieving a very uniform and semi-polished finishing coats, a sleek metallic finish was chosen to complement the color of the walls and the floor. Thus, this designer feature wall acted as a tipping point that made the entire space come alive, becoming the highlight of the house.
