Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus hands-on review

Another year, another generation of Samsung Galaxy S phones - welcome to our early review of the standard S22 and the S22 Plus, based on the limited testing time we got ahead of the phones’ launch.

The Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus are modest steps up from their S21 series predecessors, but you’d be forgiven not for noticing by looks alone, because very little has changed in the design department. There’s the same contour cut camera bump, they’re again made of plastic, and they’re basically the same size too.

The S22 has a 6.1-inch screen and the Plus has a 6.6-inch one - both are 0.1 inches smaller than their predecessors, but that’s a very small difference, one you can only really notice when comparing them side-by-side. Both have Full HD Plus resolutions, 120 hertz refresh rates, 240 hertz touch sampling rates and AMOLED screen tech.

As with nearly all Samsung phones, the display looks great - it’s vibrant, it’s bright, and it’s sharp. We’ve got no complaints

Like their predecessors, the S22 phones have a 10 megapixel front camera for selfies, as well as a 12 megapixel ultra-wide camera on the back, but while the older phones had a 64 megapixel telephoto and 12 megapixel main camera, the newer ones have a 10 megapixel telephoto camera, for 3x optical zoom, and a 50 megapixel main.

So there are some improvements and other downgrades in the camera department, and fans of zoom photos might be disappointed, but sensor improvements across the board might make up for that.

We found the camera experience roughly the same as on previous Samsung phones, but that’s probably by design - the company likes the point-and-shoot experience to be as easy as possible. Perhaps in more detailed camera comparisons we’ll find more changes, but for now, it’s basicall the same.

We couldn’t test out battery life in our brief hands-on time, but the S22 has a 3,700mAh battery and the Plus has a 4,500mAh one - both of those are 300mAh smaller than their previous iterations, but hopefully Samsung has worked on some software optimizations to make sure battery life isn’t affected too much.

When it comes to charging, the Galaxy S22 Plus is getting an improvement that its little sibling isn’t: while the smaller phone is sticking with 25W powering, like previous Galaxy S phones, the Plus is jumping up to 45W like the Ultra.

In the modern age of super-fast-charging phones, 45W is pretty middle-of-the-road, but it’s at least faster than 25W. Charging time will likely be on the fast side of an hour.
