The Main engine cooling water system is a critical part of an efficient marine engine operation. The machinery systems fitted onboard ships are designed to work with maximum efficiency and run for long hours. The most common and maximum energy loss from machinery is in the form of heat energy. This loss of heat energy in ship's engine has to be reduced or carried away by the main engine cooling system, such as jacket cooling water system in ship, to avoid malfunctioning or breakdown of the machinery.

No machinery in the engine room is lead proof and to make up the loss of water in the system due to leakages, there is a header tank, which automatically makes up any deficiency. The header tank is relatively small and located at a height in the engine room. It is supported by a deaerator tank which removes any pressure fluctuation to avoid affecting the Jacket water pump.
The Header tank is small and provided with a low-level alarm. In the case of heavy or major leakage, it will be easy to detect the same as the sudden loss of water will sound the low-level alarm.
