Doom of Hardhome: Ancient Mystery of Westeros

In A Song of Ice & Fire, Hardhome is far more mysterious than meets the eye in Game of Thrones. It became a ruin 600 years before ASOIAF begins, and no one knows what caused its destruction. In the books, Jon Snow plans to lead a rescue mission there to save the wildlings, but unlike in the show, he isn't able to go. So what caused the Doom of Hardhome? What will happen to the wildlings stuck there in The Winds of Winter? There are plenty of theories, so let's discuss.
