240+ feet deep at Fortune Pond
In this video Todd and I drop down to 242 feet deep in Fortune Pond (Crystal Falls, MI). A few people have wondered how deep Fortune Pond is and it is probably around 280' deep, but we know it is at least 245' deep from a previous dive. The cool thing about Fortune Pond is that it has fantastic water clarity down to about 145 feet deep. Then it goes from around 80' of visibility down to about 1' of visibility. Once you get below that area (at around 180' deep) the visibility comes back but there is no ambient light. I described that no-visibility area as a silt layer, but it seems to be made up of silt particulates, some tannins and Todd notice a sulfur taste to the water as we went through. The camera does pick up a lot of noise from handling the camera mount, sorry about that. Hopefully you enjoy the video.
