How to Sow & Grow Sunflowers

In this video, Eva Gilboy (aged 4) demonstrates the how easy it is to sow one of the world's most favourite plants - Sunflowers

Generations of children have enjoyed growing these colourful flowers. not only are they loved by children but also greatly appreciated by bees and other pollinating insects.

Sow the seeds to a depth of 1.5cm - 2 cm in peat free, multi purpose compost. We added some vermiculite and perlite to help promote germination and root growth.

Sow them every few weeks during the spring and plant out when there is no danger of frost. This way you will have a continuous display of flowers throughout the summer period and into the autumn.

Plant them in a sunny but sheltered spot and support them with bamboo canes as they grow.

Sunflowers thrive in well fertilised soils, water them regularly and feed them weekly, they will reward you with wonderful blooms.

At the end of the summer cut the heads of the sunflowers and allow them to dry. Each head will give you hundreds of seeds. These seeds can be used to feed the birds, who also adore them or for planting on for next years sunflowers.

With every Gilboys order we enclose a packet of sunflower seeds.
