Bartitsu Intro

Bartitsu, known for its walking stick self defence and from Sherlock Holmes, is a mixed martial art of the Victorian era.

We teach Bartitsu at Academie Duello every week, and for new students or those who just want a taste of this elegant method of fighting must attend our Introductory Workshop.

The workshop is 4 hours of overview in all 4 domains and how they integrate together.

We start at the closest range with jujitsu, the foundation of this art's name, with its importer from Japan, E.W. Barton-Wright. Bart-itsu

Next, we look at Scientific Boxing, also known as Bare knuckle or simply Fisticuffs. Modern boxing has evolved differently because of the use of those big boxing gloves.

Most importantly, this isn't a collection of random moves, but an integrated system of defence, so we investigate the ways each discipline flows into the other.

The students you've been watching are beginners themselves, our regular classes increase your skills dramatically.

If you're into Steampunk or Victorian fashion this is the martial art for you, but as you can see, we don't dress up in costumes. It isn't a fashion show, it's effective self-defence from an era when gentlemen were expected to put ruffians in their place.
