Art Clichés: Identify & Avoid Them

Art Prof Clara Lieu and Teaching Artists Deepti Menon and Alex Rowe explain what a cliché image is, and how to avoid creating artworks that will be perceived as being cliché. There are many images in art that are often times an artist's first, most obvious response. Prof Lieu, Deepti, and Alex talk about how to get past the cliché in order to create artworks that are more thought provoking and unusual in their approach.

"This was in response to the video on shapes where amongst the stuff Deepti and Clara discussed about, they mentioned about hard and soft edges, and how they made one feel. Also the relationship between shape and architecture. Here’s a marshmallow melting, from its square shape to its organic gooey melty form.

No lines are seen because focusing on shape, I did not want distinct lines to help guide the eye, but instead I wanted to rely solely (or mostly, at least) on the shape to imply the changing marshmallow form: does it make you feel sticky ooey gooey? Is that a nice sweet feeling or yucky one?

The marshmallow is on angular steps and I think I shifted the steps left and right because they mentioned curved buildings, and that influenced me a little to make the steps not straight, and increase in contrast the edges as the marshmallow melts. Perhaps a viewer would first noticed the melted marshmallow, and that in turn draws them to go backwards to the marshmallow's beginnings."

Clara Lieu was an Adjunct Professor at the Rhode Island School of Design from 2007-2020. Her artwork has been exhibited at the International Print Center NY, the Currier Museum, Childs Gallery, the Davis Museum, and more. Lieu received an artist fellowship from the MA Cultural Council, has written for the NY Times, and lectured at Brown University, the NAEA conference, and in Vancouver & China. She has been profiled in Artsy, Hyperallergic, KPCC, & WBUR.
