"Patricia Jean" - By Christian Bryan
I was at an after hours party one night around 2003 with a couple friends, and noticed this really cute portrait on the wall of this little girl.
I asked who it was, and my friend Lilly said, "That's my Mom, Patricia Jean". I said to her, "Bet you I can tell you what year this was taken". She said, "OK, give it a shot".
"1953". Her jaw dropped, and told me it was taken in 1952. She asked me how I could tell, and I simply told her that I'm a "Pop Culture Hound", especially for 1940s-70s stuff, and can usually date a photo with reasonable accuarcy.
I asked where her Mom was now; she informed me that she had been killed by a drunk driver. Losing my own mother prematurely, I of course empathised with her greatly.
As the party wore on, I told her, "You know what, I'm going to write a song for Patricia Jean". She kind of laughed, and said, "Oh, that would be nice Christian".
When I got home at around 5 AM, I picked up the guitar, tuned it Jimmy Page's "Bron-Y-aur", played that song for kicks, and then started dinking around with various passages while thinking of that portrait, and also thinking of a friend of mine who had recently passed, Darrell Peters.
Now, I'm not a songwriter, but this piece just flowed out in around 20 minutes; I got lucky. There's NO melody, NO vocals,it's MONOTONOUS, its just basically a rythym track, but all my friends have told me it's the best thing I've ever done, and they seem to like it.
I owe everything to Jimmy Page for this, because had it not been for the alternate guitar tuning (CACGCE) this song would never have been written.
Way too much "Flange" on the guitar; it was one of those cheap ZOOM pedals with the "All or nothing" effect. :-)
I recorded it, gave to Lilly, and she loved it.
Christian Byan: Acoustic Guitar & Indian Sitar
