"Rise of the Ronin" is a role-playing game set in an open world, developed by Team Ninja and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment in collaboration with XDev from PlayStation Studios. The game takes place in the late 19th century, during the Bakumatsu period, which was the last phase of the Edo era. The events take place against the backdrop of the Boshin War that took place between the Tokugawa shogunate and other factions unhappy about the increasing Western influence.

One of the key features of the game is the ability to create a custom character. The player can choose from a variety of weapons that were commonly used during the Boshin War, including katanas and different firearms. The story is nonlinear and the player can choose to side with or oppose various non-playable characters at critical points, affecting the future narrative.
