The evolving identity of a first generation American | Somara Theodore | TEDxCreativeCoast

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Somara, whose family hails from Trinidad, has grown up as a first generation American. The complexities of her own experience informed her understanding of the even wider complexities beyond her own.

Somara has always been passionate about the weather. Throughout college she conducted research funded by NASA, NOAA and participated in a field study in China. She has also interned with WUSA CBS 9 in Washington, DC, WGCL CBS Atlanta, and The Weather Channel. She has recently graduated from Penn State University with a major in Meteorology and Minors in Energy Business and Finance as well as Mandarin Chinese. Outside of weather, she loves helping others any way she can. She also has a passion for spreading the beauty of culture and hopes by speaking on the topic of cultural diversity that new bridges and connections will be made throughout mankind.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
