This video contains:

👉🏻 Balance Stacking Sculptured: a series of torques in unstable equilibrium complete this Calder-esque structure. As each component is added its weighted end balances all the others before it, with the initial small piece weighing about a gram or so. Remove the end piece and the whole structure comes down. Another wonderful design by artist Bin Xu.

👉🏻 Magnetic Influence on Aluminum: physics puzzler- Spin a magnet under a beer can suspended by a thread, and the can will turn. Why? Aluminum is not ferromagnetic, and as shown, magnets are not attracted to the can. So how does a spinning magnet influence the can to spin?

Answer: the can spins due to eddy currents induced in the conducting aluminum due to the moving magnetic fields underneath. The eddy currents make the can into a temporary electromagnet that then attracts the magnets below according to the famous law by Lenz.

👉🏻 Magnetic Stirrer Vortex: whirlpool powered by a magnetic stirrer (like those in a chemistry lab) with a range of up to 2300 rpm. Investigating the intricately changing structure of the vortex in slow motion. More amazing physics with this magnetic stirrer in future posts.

👉🏻 "Pet Tornado": whirlpool powered by a magnetic stirrer (like those in a chemistry lab). The knob on the side has settings F1 through F5 😁 One of my sillier toys- but vortices are just so cool.

👉🏻 Calling Dr. Manhattan: floating rings illusion device inspired by the recent Watchmen series. Two attached rings appear to roll in an impossible way around an orb, featured in a number of scenes on top of blue interplanetary phone booths in the new Watchmen series. Created in my shop with plastic rings and some blue spray paint, I think I got the proportions about right.

👉🏻 Drinking Bird Heat Engine: this classic physics toy came in my @thecuriositybox which provided this orange species of the bird complete with dapper top hat emblazoned with the Vsauce logo. Cooling by evaporation at the head leads to lower pressure in the top bulb, the pressure in the bottom bulb pushes the dichloromethane fluid up the neck making the bird top heavy and the bird tips over dipping its beak and letting the fluid return to the bottom bulb. The process repeats, and as long as the top stays wet and cooler than the bottom this heat engine will continue to cycle.

👉🏻 Split Sphere Spin Top: this finely crafted wooden top spins in a stable fashion as long as it does not tilt from the vertical more than a few degrees. If the top does lean over centripetal acceleration will pull the halves apart which then roll in a circle due to conservation of angular momentum. The second video shows the process in slow motion.

👉🏻 Dandelin Spheres: Slicing a cone with a plane can produce an ellipse, and two spheres encapsulated by the same cone will always have the small sphere touching one focus and the large sphere contacting the plane at the other focus. This beautiful acrylic model shows this geometry for one choice of cone width and dissecting plane angle- but it is always true. This geometric construction is named for its inventor, French mathematician Germinal Pierre Dandelin back in 1822, and with it he proved theorems concerning properties of ellipses and other conic sections- mathematical entities that play a roll in much physics- including the orbits of planets.

👉🏻 Magnetic Defiance of Gravity: a nail suspended between a chain and a powerful neodymium magnet. Ferromagnetic attraction over a distance of many millimeters, and a reminder of the presence of the typically invisible electromagnetic forces all around us. Make your own with a paperclip, string, and a refrigerator magnet!

👉🏻 Magnetic Field Lines Sculpture: nails suspended by thin chain point in the direction of the magnetic field of a neodymium dipole magnet. Ferromagnetic substances (such as the iron in nails) become temporary magnets when in the presence of an external magnetic field.
BONUS CLIP
Magnetic Suspension Sculpture: two neodymium magnets on chains suspended by their mutual magnetic attraction in this prototype. These powerful magnets hold the chains taut with a half inch gap.
