When Lord of the Dance was created in 1996, everyone in the world said it couldn't be done. Like pushing an elephant uphill, every step was a battle. Outside of the dancers themselves, only one group believed in the show:
You.
Rewind the clock. It's 1996. Michael has been unceremoniously removed from his first Irish dance show, which continues on with his choreography. His art form is in the hands of others. He could either go quietly into the night, or get up off the canvas and *prove* this was his art form. The only way to do that was to build another show.
From that decision came Lord of the Dance. Paid for entirely with his own money, it's probably the most audacious gamble in the history of show business: a second Irish dance show in a brand-new genre at a time when nobody thought the market could support two shows, paid for entirely by him, which he choreographed, directed, and starred in. It would be like asking George Lucas to not only write and direct the original Star Wars, but also do Alan Ladd Jr.'s job of financing it *and* play Luke Skywalker at the same time.
This is a detail that's often overlooked: Michael Flatley literally bankrupted himself just to prove a point as an artist.
The truth of that -- the *authenticity* of it -- comes across. If you watch the original 1996 video, it's so blisteringly intense because it really is the ultimate hail-mary swing for the fences. Here's the blue-collar Yank outsider and his team of kids up against the world, winner take all.
It worked.
And it *still* works, years after Michael retired from the stage, because of you. Lord of the Dance has never been an austere, ivory-tower experience; it goes for the simplest and deepest emotions we all feel -- good versus bad, love versus lust, hope versus despair -- and puts them on display in big, bold primary colors with a hard-won feel-good ending. Team Lord works *hard* to bring you to your feet every night, and that standing ovation gives it all back.
So this is a special shout-out to you. You, who believed. Who *still* believes. Because there's been a tremendous reawakening in the fanbase over the last year, and wait'll you see what's coming next.
