River Guitar Lesson (Leon Bridges) Acoustic Guitar Tutorial

Check out my new acoustic guitar lesson on how to play ‘River’ by Leon Bridges. This one was brought to me by my student Julie, so this one goes out to her.

In this guitar tutorial I go through the chord progressions and strumming patterns. I’ve based the transcription on the original recording and a couple of live performances that I found on YouTube. Here’s a live performance that I found particularly useful - https://youtu.be/s_paZpQvca0

Whilst, Leon Bridges does sometimes play this without a capo using solely barre chords, it seems that his most common way to play this (especially on acoustic guitar) is with a capo on the 4th fret. That places us in the feel of E major and the chords being used (I ii and IV) will be E, F# minor and A. The F# minor needs some effort to get clean as the barre finger is holding down four of the six strings.

If you’re more of a beginner player you can place the capo on the 1st fret which moves us to the feel of G major. The chords (I, ii, IV) will then be G, Am and C - much easier!

I initially thought there was a tied strumming pattern but the live performances show his strumming all 8th notes. Look out though to try and accent on the downbeat of 3 (where the tambourine hits in the original recording).
