Yakuts are a Turkic people who live in the Republic of Saha (Caxa) in the Russian Federation, which is also called Yakutia. They call themselves the Saha and speak Russian and Yakut, which is a North Siberian Turkic tongue related to Dolgan. They are known for animal husbandry of Yakut horses and Yakut cattle. They make a characteristic Yakut knife. Northern Yakuts herd reindeer like the Sami. Yakut drink kumis made from mare and reindeer milk and eat sliced frozen salted fish Stroganina, venison, Indigirka fish salad, and salamat — a millet porridge with butter and horse fat. In the late 1920s they were systematically persecuted by Joseph Stalin. The word Shaman originates with the Yakut. While most were converted by the Russian Orthodox church, some still practice shamanism and Tengrism (animism, totemism, and ancestor worship.) Yakut believes may have been the origin of the prototype figure that later became Odin (Yakut: Odqan) and the Valkyrie (Yakut: Abassi). In Yakutsk, winter temperature can be -56°C (-69°F) sometimes.
