iPad Mouse Support Without a Mouse! (Using mouse mode on the Planck EZ mechanical keyboard)

A quick video showing how useful the mouse emulation mode in the ZSA Planck EZ keyboard is. This makes using the iPad in a super-productive way in the car or other casual environments quite possible without needing to work out how and where you can place a mouse or trackpad in these awkward situations. The keyboard itself can emulate the mouse and it works really well in iPad OS 14 with its great support for mice.

I quite often find I am using the iPad with the Planck EZ keyboard and the ability to quickly switch to using the mouse mode straight from the keyboard is huge. In particular in the car where the iPad is that much further away from you so it's even more of an interruption to reach over and use the screen.

When using the mouse mode on the ZSA Planck EZ I have found out what I think is the most effective way of controlling the cursor with the keys - instead of holding them down and hoping you let go at the right place, the trick is to use a 'pulsing' pattern to move the cursor around in a predictable way. It should be noted that the mouse mode works on the Moonlander as well and is actually surprisingly effective on the Mac (and presumably Windows too).

The trick is to not think about it as a replacement for your mouse, but rather a supplementary system you can call on when the situation is right for it.
