Кострома / Kostroma in 1967

Here I present a series of photographs of the historic city of Kostroma in the province of the same name. The city, is believed, by many, to have been established in 1152, by Yuri Dolgoruky. The first recorded mention , though, is in 1213. The city is located at the confluence of the Volga and Kostroma Rivers and like other towns of Eastern Rus, was sacked by the Mongol Hordes in 1238......Later Kostroma was bought by Ivan I of Moscow and became one of the northernmost towns of the Grand Duchy of Moscow. The city grew manifestly during the 16th century, due in part to English and Dutch merchants through the northern port of Archangel. In 1773, Kostroma was devastated by a great fire. Afterwards the city was rebuilt with streets radiating from a single focal point near the river and is regarded today as one of the best preserved examples of 18th century Town Planning.....
