SUPERCUB: 2019 Honda Super Cub C125 - USA OWNER Initial ride review
Today I went to Wild West Motoplex to pick up my long awaited toy... the 2019 Honda Super Cub C125A! I had a little bit of buyer's remorse because of all of the other great deals sitting on the showroom floor... so many new bikes at discounted prices! Skip to the end of this description for clickable time indexes.
I planned to make a full first ride video, but the GoPro recording bug hit me again. The camera stopped recording video just about a minute into the footage, and it only recorded audio for the remaining 10 minutes. So, I resumed with a second ride video from home after swapping cameras.
The Super Cub rides very well and is surprisingly smooth considering that it has budget suspension. The large 17" wheels seem to smooth out the bumps better than the 14" wheels on the PCX150. I think that the Cub will be great for commuting around city streets and general pleasure cruising.
The motor is still breaking-in, so I am taking it easy on it for a few hundred miles. The acceleration isn't groundbreaking by any stretch of the imagination, but it's sufficient for surface streets and stop-and-go traffic. The PCX150 definitely feels stronger on acceleration, but that is no surprise considering that its motor makes about 60% more power. I plan to make some comparison videos between the two in the next couple of weeks.
My only initial complaint with the Super Cub is with the heel-toe shifter... the heel portion interferes with foot placement on the left footpeg. I will probably get used to it, or I'll just modify the shifter to my preferences. Alternately, I may remove that piece completely and replace it with a traditional shift lever. [UPDATE: I adjusted the angle and it works MUCH better now... watch this video for details: https://youtu.be/hi24CwhOGLU ]
I will put a few hundred miles on the bike to get familiar with it, and then I will post some ride reviews and opinions about it.
Time indexes:
0:00 : Brief view of the showroom at Wild West Motoplex in Katy, TX
2:37 : First peek at my new Super Cub! A bit of background on the "limited release" situation and an overview of the bike
6:28 : The paperwork is complete, and I'm ready to take it home. I planned to make a "first ride" video, but the GoPro lockup bug strikes again, and I lost that video... wait for the flash...
7:30 : Second ride video after switching cameras. I'm just running around the neighborhood, so I'm not wearing full gear on this ride
8:25 : Notes on shifting and Honda's centrifugal clutch arrangement for the Super Cub... I was very rough with the shifting for the first few days and 100 miles or so. It takes a bit of practice to time the shifts properly
10:40 : The heel-toe shifter position is awkward... it's not in a good spot for me. I have since remedied this problem by adjusting the shifter angle: https://youtu.be/hi24CwhOGLU
12:10 : Plans to make comparison videos between the Super Cub and the PCX150 : Part 1 https://youtu.be/PUwpi9pv0lw , Part 2 https://youtu.be/lgKSJP-Xw7c, and Part 3 https://youtu.be/XNFNX2Sdvd4
15:10 : Second gear starts to see how the centrifugal clutch handles it... no problem
16:37 : Thoughts on the Super Cub reaching 60-65 mph... it will be a stretch, for sure
17:35 : Tentative plans to take the Super Cub on the 2020 Scooter Cannonball Run, not sure if it will qualify or not... hopefully we can get clarifications about the rules
