The common tortures that we see in movies nowadays are hanging, electroshocks, and Infusing water. Governments all over the world are using inhumane torture to extract information and force confessions. Do you know that colors are used to torture people as well? People would normally say it is black or dark. Utter darkness has unimaginable psychological effects.

White Room torture is considered to be one of the most dangerous forms of mental affliction. Everything around you is white.  You heard me right. Your shirt, your pants, the ceiling, the wall, your bed, and your bathroom are all white. If you think your food could have a different color, then you are wrong. A white rice meal is placed on a white bowl or white plate. Milk is white but you cannot drink it. You need to eat tasteless food like rice or to drink something tasteless like water.

But how could that innocent color take away your sanity?

And that is what we call extreme sensory deprivation which is the so-called "white torture”. It is a form of psychological torture that uses extreme sensory deprivation techniques to make prisoners hallucinate and experience breakdowns that make them highly vulnerable to psychological manipulation.

The White Room is not just white it is also soundproof so that you cannot hear anything.  You are not allowed to hear anything but yourself. When I say you cannot hear anything, I really mean it. You cannot talk to anyone and even squeaky sounds from shoes are not allowed since guards must wear padded shoes to avoid creating sound except from the noise you create yourself.

If you think you can be friends with your shadow like what Tom Hunks did in a volleyball in the Castaway movie, it will never be possible because the lighting is designed so that it does not cast any shadows. It is also airless. You cannot feel any air.

It is much more of a lighted coffin. Isn’t it?
In 2004, Authorities arrested a 17-year-old student named Amir Fakhravar for publicly criticizing the Iranian regime. He said that he spent five years in several prisons suffering physical torture, which involved beatings that lead to broken bones. According to him, the physical tortures were more bearable than the psychological torture that the white room brought him. He was not a normal person after 8 months of living in the white room. Fakhavar shared that the detainee lost all sense of identity, causing him to forget who he or anyone he knew was, that is forgetting everything about yourself and the faces of the one you value the most.
The torment doesn’t stop there. When you are almost losing your sanity, the guards even scorn you with lies about the outside world. Ebrahim Nabavi, an Iranian journalist, made a claim about white torture he said:
Since I left Evin, I have not been able to sleep without sleeping pills. It is terrible. The loneliness never leaves you, long after you are “free.” Every door that is closed on you… this is why we call it “white torture.” They get what they want without having to hit you. They know enough about you to control the information that you get: they can make you believe that the president has resigned, that they have your wife, that someone you trust has told them lies about you. You begin to break. And once you break, they have control. And then you begin to confess.

Maybe Amir and Ebrahim managed to escape, but some prisoners may have not been so fortunate and even Amir still cannot forget the torment he suffered while locked away in the white room. Some may experience long-term disorders such as PTSD involve flashbacks and nightmares stemming from how the brain processes traumatic situations.

It is possible that you have tampered reality because white torture is a sensory deprivation and method that could erase all your sense of reality. Although it may sound harmless it has been reported that by depriving the brain of access to color the victims of this torture quickly can be driven to the brink of madness. They often begin to suffer both visual and auditory hallucinations. If the torture continues long enough they can become incoherent and even attempt to harm themselves.

People need interaction. You need inter action. Interaction with nature, sound, and appearance. Humans need light and interaction to stay sane. According to Haney, human beings are socially connected organisms.  It is supported by John Leach's study that a Lack of social interaction for prolonged periods causes people to experience difficulty in establishing what is real and what is not.
