Jon Bernthal proves he's the proper man for Showtime's American Gigolo remake in less than a minute—even if he doesn't think so. The upcoming drama stars the actor and is based on Paul Schrader's 1980 film of the same name, which starred Richard Gere. The show is a neo-noir criminal thriller reimagined for today's audiences.
Bernthal plays Julian Kaye in the show. Julian gets released from jail after 15 years due to a wrongful conviction and is forced to navigate a delicate relationship with his ex-girlfriend Michelle (Gretchen Mol), his mother, and other people who have wronged him. He must also come to terms with his past as an escort.
Detective Sunday (Rosie O'Donnell) is on a mission to discover the truth about the murder that landed Julian in jail. She uncovers a deeper scheme in the process.
Bernthal sizzles as, ahem, an American gigolo while romancing Michelle, as seen in the all-too-brief trailer. Fast-paced footage also shows a bloodied Julian attempting to flee the cops before being apprehended, and then seated opposite a straight-faced Detective Sunday—what a hilarious name—played by Hector Elizondo. Will they ever work together to figure out who framed him?
