This parody was written by Dudley Moore and performed as part of 'Beyond the Fringe', a British comedy stage revue, which premiered in August 1960 at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The review was written and performed by Peter Cook, Alan Bennett, Jonathan Miller and Dudley Moore. On the official album of the show, 'The Compete Beyond The Fringe', this item is titled, somewhat enigmatically, 'And The Same To You'. It is often referred to as a parody of a Beethoven sonata but it is really only the never-ending ending (in Beethoven's favourite key of C Major) which is really reminiscent of Ludwig. The theme is from the "Colonel Bogey March", written in 1914 by Lieutenant F. J. Ricketts (1881–1945), the pen name Kenneth J. Alford, a British Army bandmaster who later became the director of music for the Royal Marines at Plymouth.
Marc-André Hamelin is playing a transcription of 'And The Same To You' made in 2009 by Rainer Hersch from various sources.
ABOUT MARC-ANDRÉ HAMELIN
“A performer of near-superhuman technical prowess” (The New York Times), pianist Marc André Hamelin is known worldwide for his unrivalled blend of consummate musicianship and brilliant technique in the great works of the established repertoire, as well as for his intrepid exploration of the rarities of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries – in concert and on disc – earning him legendary status as a true icon of the piano. What he was doing, mixing it with Rainer Hersch and orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall in London on April 1st 2013 is anyone's guess but his career seems to have survived the experience.
ABOUT RAINER HERSCH
A trained conductor and pianist, British stand-up comedian Rainer Hersch has performed on every comedy stage in the UK and in more than thirty countries across the world. He has conducted many orchestras including the St Petersburg Philharmonic, the London Philharmonia, the City of Birmingham Symphony, the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Calgary Philharmonic, Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Queensland and Tasmanian Symphony.
