In a 19th century world saturated with author’s looking to make their mark upon the early American Literary scene, why is it that from among the thousands of texts produced, Edgar Allan Poe’s works remain cemented at the core of the American canon?... Poe was a master of language, structure, and genre. He wrote with a command over his texts and an understanding of narrative and diction that have been endlessly emulated by numerous other artists throughout the decades. Therefore, the question must be proposed, Who was Edgar Allan Poe? Upon investigation, it seems as if the man himself was just as much of a mystery as the poems and stories he penned to paper. How is it that a man oft regarded as a gambler and a drunk who mysteriously died without a penny to his name, lived on in infamy through the pages of some works that he never even lived to see published? Well, in order to identify the answer to these puzzling questions, one must start like any other good story, at the beginning.
