Infinitives in English grammar || Active and passive Infinitives with practice exercise

In this lesson, we will learn different forms of infinitives!

Learning what an infinitive is not done, you need to understand and learn different forms of infinitives and how to use them. And that's exactly we are going to do in this lesson.

Forms of infinitives

Infinitives come into two forms:

1. Active form of infinitives
2. And passive form of infinitives

Under active infinitives, we have four types of infinitives:

1. Simple indefinite infinitive
To + V1

2. Continuous Infinitive
To + be + V+ING

3. Perfect continuous Infinitive
To + have + V3

4. Perfect continuous Infinitive
To + have + been + V1+ING
Under passive infinitives, we have only two types of infinitives :

1. Simple indefinite infinitives

2. Simple perfect infinitives
1. Simple indefinite infinitive

It is used to refer to an action, working as a noun, that is indefinite in time.

Active:- To + V1

• I want to purchase a car.

Want what?
to purchase
• You seem to enjoy the show.

Seem what?
To enjoy
Passive :- To + Be + V3

• I want to be loved.

Want what?
To be loved (by someone)
• She seems to be hurt.

Seems what?
To be hurt (by someone)
2. Simple continuous Infinitive

It is used to refer to an action, working as a noun, that is happening at the same time the main verb is happening.

Active : To + Be + V1+ING

• He seems to be crying.

Seems what?
To be crying (continuity)
• The teacher is pretending to be teaching.

Pretending what?
To be teaching (pretending an action in continuity)
Passive : No passive form
3. Simple perfect infinitives

It is used to refer to an action, working as a noun, that has been completed.

Active :- To + Have + V3

• He admitted to have done the crime.

Admitted what?
To have the crime (An active that's been completed)
• I denied to have taken any cash from her.

Denied what?
To have taken (an action that's been completed)
Passive :- To + Have + Been + V3

• Max is pretending to have been kissed.

Pretending what?
To have been kissed (pretending an action that has been completed by someone else)
• The students are claiming to have been beaten.

Claiming what?
To have been beaten ( claiming an action that someone else has performed on them)
4. Perfect continuous Infinitives

It is used to refer to an action, working as a noun, that has been happening for some time.

Active :- To + Have + Been + V1 + ING

• He seems to have been living with her for some time.

Seems what?
To have been living (an action that's been continuing, working as a noun)

• You pretend to have been studying.

Pretend what?
To have been studying (pretending an action that's been happening)
