Past and Present Perfect
Story:
Yesterday, after Megan *had left* for work, someone robbed her home. While the robber was stealing her things, he realized that she *had left* her gas stove on, so he turned it off for her.
Before Megan went home that day, she called her little brother and said, “I was thinking about going out to dinner. *Have you and Mary eaten* yet?” Her brother replied, “No, we *haven’t eaten* yet, but we *have already been* out to eat twice this week, so I’m not sure we can afford to go a third time.” Megan was upset for a moment but replied, “That’s ok. I *hadn’t thought* about how much I’ve spent on food lately. I guess I should save my money and cook from home too.”
After they hung up, Megan drove home and quickly realized she *had been robbed*. “Where *has the robber gone*?”, she exclaimed in fear.
