The Thirteenth Tribe of Israel - Episode 3

A three-episode series filmed in Israel, Palestine and Peru in 2010.

Ninety members of a cultural group with no Jewish roots or background were given a 12-day crash course on how to convert from indigenous Peruvian Christians to Orthodox Jews. On offer was Israeli residency, government benefits and housing and, of course, enlightenment. The requirements were simple: to acquire the absolute conviction that the land of Israel belongs exclusively to the Jews (newly converted Peruvian brothers included) and to be willing to live in the settlements of the occupied West Bank. Nowadays, the relatives of the converted Peruvians continue to arrive in the settlements, in order to practice their newly-found faith.

In this last episode, new characters, all from the Peruvian Andes, will try to explain what is it that makes them Jews: some cite an unlikely ancestry, others refer to a spiritual feeling while one of them simply "knows" that he is Jewish, and "God knows it too," he tells us. Meanwhile in Peru, the highest ranking rabbi in the country tells us that, in fact, these people do not have a verifiable Jewish lineage, but some rabbis found it convenient for them to convert. At the same time, we find out that other rabbis strongly disagree with such a controversial conversion policy.
