Tetris Effect Connected: 24 Zone Lines (World First)

In this video, I clear 24 Zone Lines in Tetris Effect: Connected. This is the first time anyone has cleared this many lines. In Journey mode, 23 is the highest you can go, and thus Kirby703 will remain at the top of the single-player leaderboards with her incredible 23-line clear. However, in the multiplayer Connected mode, you can go higher, utilizing boss blitzes in order to do the impossible.

Near when the game came out, I realized that clearing up to 25 lines was technically possible in Connected utilizing a big J or L, and using the Bump Up blitz to push the stack high enough. The initial thought was to use a large I, but this piece does not spawn centered, making it far harder to work with.

However, even the strategy with J and L proved to be very hard to use - with a full well up to 25 lines, no pieces can rotate, and thus there is little chance of clearing the full zone at the end. This can be avoided through the use of an I near the end of zone to turn a 3-wide top well into a 2-wide well, however this requires a lot of luck. To deal with this luck, I realized that you could utilize the "same piece sets" to gain "preknowledge". By playing first on the boss's board, you could learn what order the pieces come in, and use this to ensure you made the right moves on the guardian boards. At the end of zone, you can't even see the Hold and Next boxes due to the stack being too high, so this is all but essential.

To make things worse, after trying this strat a bit, I began to realize just how rare the Bump Up blitz was. You had only a 1 in 5 chance of getting this blitz, and you also needed the garbage to come in the right columns so that it could be accessible. Due to having 3 boards and thus 3 chances, this wasn't too hard, but even getting the blitz once would require many attempts, planning everything out using preknowledge, only to fail at the end. Additionally, even getting the boss to the correct level to send enough garbage was a real challenge. When the attack happened at all, it would often only send 2 garbage lines instead of 4, not enough to get the stack to row 25.

I realized that just going for 24 lines instead of 25 would make things a whole lot easier. While this still required a giant J or L, it meant that pieces could now spin in the final 2 wide (up into the "hook" of the J or L well) and thus this could be completed without a lucky I at the end. This meant preknowledge was not as necessary, and you could technically just play runs quickly and pray for good RNG during the 2 wide portion. This allowed many more attempts per hour, trying to hope to get enough that a Bump Up would be inevitable. While this strategy saw more success, getting the Bump Up blitz to the right level was still very inconsistent.

Finally, I realized that when using Tetrimidon, configured to only send certain boss blitzes, it would actually send the "signature blitz" such as Giant every single time, rather than alternating this with blitzes such as Bump Up and Rain. This opened up a strategy where instead of praying for a lucky Bump Up blitz, you would simply use multiple Giant blitzes to systematically fill the entire top. While this required a bit more micromanagement of the boss and guardians, it removed a huge random aspect of the run, making things a lot more viable. The plan was now to get one side of the stack filled in as a 4x8 block using two giant Is, Js, or Ls, and the other side to be filled in using a giant S, T, or Z, leaving a "hook" for the final giant J or L.

This strategy was only attemptable on one day each week, as the Full Moon event is the only way players are able to control the boss. It took several weeks to pull this off, trying a few times each week, each time getting better at quickly obtaining preknowledge and quickly planning out the stacking. Once I had my strategy down, it actually wasn't that bad to pull this off.

I used Local mode to do this and controlled all four players myself, in order to allow pausing. To control all 3 of the guardian players with one keyboard, I used a program called Keyboard Splitter that maps keyboard to controller. x360ce would also probably accomplish the same goal.
