The Next Frontier in Mathematics: Richard Charles at TEDxCherryCreekED

The recent focus on STEM in K-12 Education poses an interesting dilemma. Students need to develop 21st century skills that require them to apply their knowledge in the real world. At the same time, teachers continue to teach mathematics in a traditional manner, understanding that the fundamental concepts are important. Some argue that this is akin to teaching a child to ride a bike by first learning how all the components work. I argue that the next frontier in K-12 mathematics hinges on a ability to teach mathematics from a modeling perspective. Students need to learn how math is used to solve problems in the real world, then learn the details as necessary.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
