Bird Wing Shapes - How Birds Fly

There are four main types of bird wing, each with different benefits. We talk about the long soaring wing used by albatross and other seabirds for long-distance active soaring. Then it's on to the delta wing favored by fast-moving birds like falcons and swifts. The third main type is the slotted wing that you see on eagles and vultures, which let them ride air currents and lift heavy prey animals (or full bellies) into the air quickly. And finally we cover the elliptical wing, which is a compromise between the other types. Elliptical wings can be used for soaring or fast flying through a forest, but they do neither as well as a specialized wing.
