Hummingbirds heart beats at a rate of just over 1000 beats per minute (1263 per minute) and flutter their wings in a figure 8 motion at a remarkable 80 times per second enabling them to go backwards in flight and also to hover in one spot while feeding. They will also perch from time to time to catch a breather.
