Das Zimmer
Pipilotti Rist: Big Heartedness, Be My Neighbor at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA is the first West Coast survey of the internationally renowned Swiss media artist. Rist’s installations explore relationships of video and the body; exterior environments and interior psychological landscapes; and reason and instinct. The exhibition surveys more than thirty years of the Zürich-based artist’s work, encompassing early single-channel videos; large-scale installations brimming with color and hypnotic musical scores; and sculptures that merge everyday objects, video, and decorative forms.
Das Zimmer (The Room) is a 1994 installation that features an oversized living room. The installation infantilizes the viewer, who can plop down on the gigantic pleather sofa and use a comically large remote to channel surf through the artist’s single-channel videos on a normal-sized television—as if to say, scale and memory are subjective and relative, but the television set is a constant. Das Zimmer is now on view in Pipilotti Rist: Big Heartedness, Be My Neighbor at The Geffen Contemporary.
Pipilotti Rist: Big Heartedness, Be My Neighbor is on view September 12, 2021 - June 5, 2022. This exhibition is organized by Anna Katz, Curator, with Karlyn Olvido, Curatorial Associate, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Tickets are on sale now at moca.org.
