Cycling Computer vs Smartphone. (How to use a smartphone as a cycling computer)

My Garmin cycling computer is a rather flaky, unreliable device but I still love it. But if I was thinking about trying something, what are the the alternatives?

The obvious answer would be to use my smartphone as a cycling computer. After all, it is really good at recording GPS data and from that, it can calculate speed and distance fairly accurately.

So what are the pros and cons of using a smartphone as a cycling computer?
