Imploding Can Experiment (Chemistry)

This video shows you how to implode an aluminum can using water and atmospheric pressure. Filling the can with steam and then exposing that steam to cold water causes it to condense back into water leaving no gas particles on the inside of the can to exert pressure outward. The air around the can, however, still contains many particles exerting a force inward which then crushes the can.

▶️ How to do the imploding can experiment:
Step 1: Start by filling the baking dish ½ full of ice, and then add water until it's completely full.

Step 2: Add about 1 tblsp of the water to an aluminum can.

Step 3: Place the can on a hot plate.

Step 4: Turn the hot plate on high and wait for steam to be pouring out the top. At this point, your can is ready to be imploded.

Step 5: Remove the can from the hot plate using tongs, and then in one motion, pour out the rest of the fluid and submerge the top of the can in the ice water.

▶️ How the air pressure can crushing experiment works:
The can implodes because, as the steam condenses back into the water, there are no gas molecules on the inside of the can pushing outward against the atmospheric pressure. This allows the atmospheric pressure to crush the can.
