How Did Ethiopia Avoid Colonialism?

Why wasn't Ethiopia colonized by Europeans? Out of all of the countries of Africa, only two—Liberia and Ethiopia—managed to come out of the scramble for Africa without a European overlord, and unlike Liberia, which was protected by the US, Ethiopia managed to successfully fight off invading European armies. Their Emperors, notably Tewodros II and Menelik II, adopted western technology and means of administration, and in doing so, gave Ethiopia a fighting chance against some of the most powerful states in history.
