Lithium-ion battery fires spark alarming concerns over public safety

An energy storage expert has warned that fires caused by lithium batteries are expected to rise over the years as the use of lithium-ion batteries in products continues to increase.

It comes after a fire broke out at a Tesla lithium battery storage unit near Rockhampton just before 8pm on Tuesday night.

Sky News host Chris Kenny sat down with Nationals MP Keith Pitt to discuss the rise in lithium-ion batteries and what can be done to minimise them.

“Alarmingly, we're having these lithium batteries … going up in houses, in people's garages and in their storage room,” Mr Kenny said.

“We're being told to expect more and more of these; it’s a real worry as we're being told to expect more of these.”
