Repurposing Victoria's Mast - Episode 155 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat
Getting Victoria early in the project was one of the best decisions we have made. There was so much good material packed in that little vessel, and it seems like she just keeps giving every day. From all the beautiful mahogany in her interior, to the bronze fittings and hardware she was decked out in. And now, one more thing—her mast.
Victoria was a cutter, so she had one mast. It came to us taller and of a bigger diameter than Arabella's mizzen mast is designed to be, so with that in mind, and after assessing its condition, it turns out that after some modifications, it'll be well worth using as our mizzen.
This meant turning down and truing this 7-inch diameter stick to 6 inches. Not an easy task, and it takes us to a fun little experiment along the way.
Thank you for watching and supporting. We hope you enjoy the episode this week, and the link to support us by getting yourself a limited-edition Akiva shirt (before April 2, 2021) in the Bonfire fundraiser is here: https://www.bonfire.com/akiva-dreams

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.
